Back-to-School Smiles: Teeth Tips for Kids

It’s that time of year again. As summer draws to a close, it's time to think about all things related to back to school: school supplies, outfits, carpool, sports. In the hustle and bustle to get everything ready for the school year, it can be easy to forget about one of the most important parts of our children’s health: their teeth.

In fact, oral health plays a huge role when it comes to school. Studies show that 31 percent of parents in the United States report their children have missed school due to dental problems. On average, elementary school students miss six days of school a year for dental-related issues, according to research from the University of Southern California.

Here are a few tips to help keep your children’s teeth in top shape this school year so they can focus on learning and having fun:

Schedule an exam

Although dental checkups are not a mandatory part of school registration like medical exams are, they can be just as important. Making sure any issues are taken care of before school starts can help prevent missed school days once classes begin. Professional cleanings also help remove built-up plaque to prevent the formation of cavities and decay.

Pack lunch strategically
Many of the most common drinks kids consume daily are not good for their teeth. Sports drinks and juices contain loads of sugar and acids, which eat away at the enamel on the teeth. Water is the best choice to keep hydrated and keep teeth healthy. When it comes to snacks, the less sugar the better, as well. Swap out the chips and crackers for nuts, fruits and vegetables. It may take some getting used to, but your kids will thank you when they’re older.

Pencil in oral hygiene
Fall is the busiest time of year for many families. Getting used to waking up early can be a process, one that often leads to rushed mornings with minimal time for getting ready. One of the most often skipped steps for children is brushing their teeth. Be sure to plan enough time in the mornings before school and in the evenings before bed for about five minutes of flossing, brushing, rinsing and cleaning up the tools and sink area. This will help form healthy habits now that will last a lifetime.
