Biocompatibility Testing

What is Biocompatibility Testing?

It sounds confusing and complicated: biocompatibility. Merriam-Webster defines it as: the condition of being compatible with living tissue or a living system by not being toxic or injurious and not causing immunological rejection. Basically, this means that the material used in a medical or dental procedure will be compatible with your body.

Why Have Biocompatibility Testing Done?

In the same way that everyone reacts to different foods in different ways, some people may be intolerant or allergic to certain materials used in dentistry. Even if you only have a tiny bit of one food you’re allergic to, you will likely have a reaction. In dentistry, many materials are made of lots of different things. So, if your body is allergic or intolerant to one tiny thing in the mixture of a material, you could have a problem. With food, usually, it only takes a few hours after the reaction for your body to return to normal. When it comes to things like dental fillings, the material remains in your body for years. That’s why it’s so important to be sure your body will react to the material in a positive, safe and healthy way.

Three Ways to Test

There are actually three different methods for testing biocompatibility of anywhere from 2,000 to 14,000 materials.

Muscle Response Testing

This non-invasive method involves having the patient hold the material in their hand and conducting a muscle test. The idea is that the material will likely weaken the muscle of it’s not compatible with their body.

Electro Galvanic Skin Response

Electro-dermal screening measures changes in the flow of body energy based on acupressure and biofeedback technology. An electrode device is placed in the hand while a stylus takes measurements and analyzes data to determine biocompatibility of materials.

Blood Test

A simple blood sample sent to a lab for analysis can test for biocompatibility of thousands of dental materials to determine which are best for your individual body chemistry.
