You Won't Believe What's Hiding in Your Toothbrush!

Those who consider themselves "Germaphobes" are not going to like this one. A study conducted by Manchester University found that more than 10 million bacteria live in the average toothbrush.

You might say to yourself, "not mine! I keep my covered and away from the toilet!" Unfortunately, that may just not be enough to keep your brush free from bacteria.

It was such a popular question that the popular series MythBusters even took on the challenge of determining just how true this is. During their experiment, they placed 24 toothbrushes in a bathroom, uncovered and rinsed them every day. They also placed two other toothbrushes far away from the bathroom on the other side of the building. After a month, they sent them out to be tested for bacteria. Just as the study at Manchester University found, the toothbrushes were all covered in a microscopic fecal matter, even the ones not stored in the bathroom.

This just goes to show that covering your brush isn’t doing you any favors. In fact, it’s recommended to leave your brush free from covers to allow it to air out after each use. Trapped moisture creates a breeding ground for bacteria that can make things even worse.

Here are some tips if you’re feeling particularly grossed out on how to sanitize and keep your brush as clean as you can:

  • Replace it every 3 months at the very least and after any illness
  • Rinse the brush extremely well in hot water before and after brushing and try to get excess water off when you’re finished
  • Store it upright (bristles up and handle down) and not touching any other brushes or surfaces
  • Soak your brush in antibacterial solution such as a mouthwash containing alcohol for 10 minutes at a time when you feel like an extra deep cleaning

The best way to keep your mouth extra clean is coming in for your twice annual professional cleanings and exams. If you’re due for a cleaning, call our office today at 262-264-7711.
